Where Redemption, Beauty, and Grace Meet

Hi, I’m Deborah Rutherford.

For years, I spent my career helping people discover outward beauty as an Emmy Award-winning makeup artist. Today, I write and speak about the beauty only Christ can create—a heart transformed by His redeeming grace.

As the author of Prodigal Daughter and founder of the Behold-Her Beauty Blog, Letter & Podcast, I invite women and teen girls to slow down, behold Christ, and discover the beauty of redemption, grace, and their identity in Him.

Whether through poetry, essays, podcasts, or books, my prayer is that every word points you to Jesus—the One who brings beauty from broken places and calls us His own.

Home is now among the peaceful pines of Georgia, where life is a little quieter, coffee tastes a little better, and God’s grace continues to write beautiful stories.

Come as you are.

Stay awhile.

There’s a seat at the table for you.

With grace,

Deborah

THINGS THAT FALL 🍂 🍁 💛 A blossom drifts down from THINGS THAT FALL 🍂 🍁 💛

A blossom drifts down
from the pear and cherry trees,
and in the morning, a yellow pollen dusts
just about everything.
A snowflake lands on my nose
as I jump onto a snow bank;
the evergreens full
as the cardinals come home.
A yellow, sepia leaf tumbles
and tosses as rain drenches.
A flag lowered to half-mast.
A stumble, and my knees skid and bleed.
A bite into forbidden fruit.
A baby bird slipped out of the nest as it stretched its wings to fly off into the sky.
The bread goes through its rise,
then falls.

How is your Autumn going, dear friend? I’d love to hear about yours; please share in the comments: What is your favorite thing about Autumn? Is it the way October’s light is golden, turning the tree leaves gold? Or perhaps the season changing. Has God called you to let your leaves fall too, or perhaps change colors? I can’t wait to hear how you are experiencing this beautiful time of year.

Do you believe this? I pondered as I read: "Jesu Do you believe this?

I pondered as I read:

"Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

John 11:25-27

Do you believe this?

And such beauty and peace filled me as I responded:

"So beautiful. Yes Lord I believe." 🙏

I know Wendell Berry has meant so much to many of I know Wendell Berry has meant so much to many of us. I wrote this poem, “The Holy Wild,” after his poem “The Peace of Wild Things,” first published in @thewayback2ourselves: The Peace of Wild Things Journal. When the theme was announced, my heart jumped a little, okay, a lot, because this is my place: reflection and pondering as I find my peace in the wild. Thank you, Wendell Berry, for your lovely poem.

Exciting news coming soon about @thewayback2ourselves Rooted Journal. Can't wait to share.

THE HOLY WILD

The vivid red bird,
stark on the vanilla railing,
flew off to the Myrtle tree.
In the misty morning
I reached for the sun
only to find clouds.

I stepped into the moss
to stick my nose
into a just-born gardenia
and drank her sweet aroma—
a bit like delicious dark chocolate.

There were probably sounds
of cars, mowers, and a plane overhead,
but the flowers silenced it all—
like sound barriers,
portals to another world,
another garden.

And when the winds of despair gathered,
I found refuge there
where I was free
to wander, seek, and wonder
in the Holy Wild.

I wondered:
When man first walked out of the garden,
what did he leave behind?

The rain drizzled and tickled
while my husband tended
to a bent sunflower
who needed his gentle twine.

Again, I wondered:
Do the trees mind the cars passing by?
Have we lost touch with our garden-selves?
Will God swoop everything up
and take it back to Heaven with him?

Dear God, can we return to the holy wild?

Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice before the Lord.” —Psalm 96:12 NKJV
