Hi, I’m Deborah, a Christian wife, poet, and writer. My passion is writing about the profound ways God is at work in my life, from the lessons He teaches me to the faith He instills in me. I find His handprints everywhere, giving us glimpses of Heaven to make our days a little easier, kinder, and gentler.
I imagine I stood there in anticipation, slack-jawed, when I heard God’s clear, beautiful voice, “Paint landscapes.” #Summer #Beauty #Refresh

Before I made the life-changing move from California to Georgia, I had a profound dream. In this dream, I found myself in God’s throne room, high up in the clouds of Heaven. God, in all His glory, welcomed me and invited me to ask my most burning question. The question that had always lingered in the depths of my soul: “What do you want me to do, God?”
I imagine I stood there in anticipation, slack-jawed, when I heard God’s clear, beautiful voice, “Paint landscapes.”
Surprised at such a commission, I awoke to find myself in the place before night and day.
I admit I was in a quandary. Did God really want me to paint landscapes? Was this truly God’s plan for my life?
So, I carried this dream all the way to Georgia. I painted a few watercolors of the clouds over the towering pines. While at Hobby Lobby, I picked up canvases, painting books, oils, and acrylics. It wasn’t entirely out of the blue, as my mother had put me in painting class when I was a child because I was so awkward in dance. Additionally, I made my living for many years as a makeup artist for film and television, painting faces.
But then, something unexpected happened. My pen came alive, and words flowed from my Creator to me onto the page. This is when and where I felt pure joy and alive.
Then I confided in a friend about my dream. She said, “Well, I think you are already painting landscapes with your writing and with your life.” She added another gem, “There are many ways to paint landscapes.”
This was a revelation in itself. Then God showed me that ‘painting landscapes’ wasn’t just about using a paintbrush and canvas. ‘Painting landscapes’ was also about poetry, sewing, gardening, and more, cultivating a beautiful, God-purposed life with our creative callings. Looking back, I see this dream was a turning point in my life. This divine revelation set me on the path of spiritual and creative exploration.
I wanted to share this beautiful revelation with you, which is why I created my free resource: Painting Landscapes: Cultivating Our Creative Callings. Please use my journal and its prompts to reflect on what it might mean for you to paint landscapes.
My hope is that by using my Painting Landscapes journal, you will cultivate creativity as you invite God into your co-creating with you.
Take time to dream and contemplate, and see what landscapes God may be calling you to paint. By expressing yourself in the ways that God calls you to, you will create His beauty to share with the world.
There are many ways to cultivate creativity in our lives. In my Painting Landscapes Journal, I provide five prompts to get you started, followed by a blank page to add whatever you like.
There is no right or wrong. This isn’t about a finished project or product; it’s about cultivating creativity in our lives with God as our Co-Creator. Feel free to express yourself in the way that feels most natural to you.

The Basics:
- Pick a creative activity. Get out everything that you will need. Find a comfortable space. Add music if you like. I prefer open windows and quiet. But sometimes I like to listen to a podcast or a teaching while I’m working on a creative project.
- Invite God into your creativity with this prayer or one of your own:
Dear heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of creativity. Please join me today in my creativity of ______________. Thank you for the gift of creativity. May your Spirit fill me and provide me restoration and rest as I cultivate creativity and share Your beauty with the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
- Begin and relish the process of co-creating with your Creator with Painting Landscapes. Some people find it helpful to set a timer or a time limit. I usually just continue until I feel a sense of fulfillment and joy. You can share your journey with others or invite a friend to join you. The possibilities are endless when we start with a lovely step in co-creating with our Creator.
I encourage you to share in the comments a favorite . Feel free to use my new PDF Resource Painting Landscapes: Cultivating our Creative Callings.
Smiles & love, wonderfully made,
Deborah
