BEAUTY IN HIS EYES
My whole life, I have struggled with feeling like I don’t belong. Despising the things that make me “different” and feeling like I don’t “fit” anywhere. For the last few years, I have been working on trying to change how I think. Learning to see myself as God sees me. But that is a process that takes time and it hasn’t been without setbacks.
Recently, I got buried under an onslaught of comparison, negative thoughts, and self-doubt. The attack came at the end of a very busy week as I was facing some writing and relationship disappointments, the failure to reach some goals I had set for myself, and a host of challenging parenting moments with our four boys. All this while also trying (rather unsuccessfully) to help my very stressed out husband complete some renovations in our house. Anxiety, rejection, and over-all exhaustion rolled over me in waves. I felt like I was failing on every front and not “measuring up”. Feeling lost, disconnected, “not enough”. Not acceptable. Unable to cope. I just wasn’t enough like “her”. Maybe you can relate.
I knew deep in my heart that the thoughts flooding my mind were lies, but they came so strong and fast, and I buckled under the weight of them for a moment. I was temporarily blinded, but I knew where I needed to go. I crawled into my Abba’s arms and asked Him to open my eyes to the Truth, to remind me of who He made me to be. And He did, beautifully reminding me of His Love and my value to Him in a way that took my breath away. It started with a sunset.
Our world is filled with colour. A kaleidoscope of textures and shapes. A riot of constantly changing beauty. From the grandest of mountains to the smallest speck of dust, we’re surrounded by the thought, care, and design of an Artist creating His masterpiece.
Every sunrise and sunset.
Every blade of grass.
Every leaf and flower.
Every snowflake and grain of sand.
Each one is unique and bears the Master’s signature. And the wonder of their singularity fascinates us.
So, why do we call the beauty of the sunset perfection – though no two are ever alike – our appreciation of their individuality a nod to the Creator, and yet look in the mirror, viewing our own uniqueness and call it flawed? Why do we compare ourselves and when we aren’t “equivalent” to our neighbours, or the culturally acceptable standard, we label ourselves, our actions, our way of thinking and feeling, a mistake? Substandard. Imperfect.
*Why is it so easy to see beauty in creation, but not when we look at ourselves?
*Why do we focus on our quirks and differences as if they were something to be hidden, despised, or changed rather than seeing the carefully planned strokes of the Master’s brush?
*Why do we try so hard to be someone else, to live up to a standard another has set, or conform to a mold that culture demands?
We forget that we are individual masterpieces, created by God in ways that will never be identical to another.
We forget that the palette of colours, textures, and shapes, that make our world beautiful were meant to show us our beauty too.
I love how George Washington Carver put it:
“I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.”
God’s crowning creation, most precious and formed with His own Hands, given life with His own breath, was mankind. His wealth of creativity and love for each one of us, would not allow for making copies.
Each of us is a dearly loved original. And that’s why it breaks His heart when we fail to see the treasure that He made us to be. When we hide away the wonderful differences – the cascade of colours – that make us an original and trade them instead for shades of gray.
Only the Artist determines the beauty and worth of a masterpiece. And He’s determined that YOU are Priceless!
Beauty does not originate in the eye of the beholder. The beholder merely forms their own opinion and interpretation based on their tastes and biases. That’s why we need to learn to see with the eyes of the One Who designed us. In all of our individual, quirky, beautiful ways. Because only the Artist determines the beauty and worth of their artistry. And He’s determined that you are priceless. A magnificent one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Just the way you are.
“For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].” Ephesians 2:10 AMP
Perhaps you’ve had a week like I did. Perhaps you struggle with thoughts of insignificance and doubt your worth, comparing yourself to others around you. But, today, I hope that your eyes are opened to see the Truth. That you ask the Creator to whisper to your heart, just as He did to mine. Because you won’t see what the Artist sees until you look at yourself through His eyes. Only then can you understand and embrace the wonder that is You.
So, no more hiding in the shadows. No more wearing masks. No more trying to be something you’re not. No more trying to “fit” into spaces that weren’t meant for you. No more trading your colours for gray. Because you were never meant to fade into the background.
It’s time to embrace the things that make you uniquely, apologetically, “you”. Walk the path that God has set for you. And SHINE BRIGHT, beautiful Sister, with all the brilliance of the Master’s artistry.

How does God see you?
Behold-Her Beauty seeks to help women see themselves as God’s beautiful daughters.
My whole life changed the day I realized that God sees me as His beautiful daughter. Not the distorted flawed images I perceived, nor what others thought of me, and especially not what the world told me.
The benefits of seeing ourselves as God’s beautiful daughter are revolutionary and freeing. We no longer find our worth and approval in the world because God values and loves us.
Today, right now, know that you have permission to be beautiful as you embrace your already God-given beauty and live as God’s beautiful daughter.
- We are God’s masterpieces. God created each of us, His work of art, in Jesus Christ for good work, which God prepared beforehand (Ephesians 2:10).
- God made you in His image. “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27 NKJV
- God chose you; you are His treasure and the apple of His eye. “But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” 2 Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV
Embrace your God-given beauty and live without shame, bitterness, and self-condemnation.
I have put together 10 ways to reclaim your God-given beauty.
Start today by meditating on the Scripture in each declaration section. I like to write the Scripture verse in my journal and then pray about what God is teaching me. Then, do one of the action steps in each section.
You have permission to be beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and our Beholder is God.
I would love to connect more with you and give you my FREE gift – The Behold-Her Beauty Manifest: You Have Permission to Be Beautiful.
