Where Redemption, Beauty, and Grace Meet

Deborah Rutherford Books

Prodigal Daughter: Poems of Light for the Lost Ones by Deborah Rutherford, presented by The Way Back Books collection, debuts and quickly rose to #1 Christian Poetry and #3 Religious Poetry in New Releases. You can come Home again. Experience “Prodigal Daughter,” a collection of poems by Deborah. Whether you’re seeking biblical redemption or a light in the darkness, find hope and healing for the lost ones here.

Prodigal Daughter is a story of beauty from ashes, second chances, and new beginnings. I wrote these poems under the Georgia pines, often in tears, praying they would find the one who feels they have wandered too far. Does God love them? Can we return home again?

The answer is found in God’s wonderful love for His beloved. This collection is for those of us who have wandered, feel lost, or love someone who has. It is a true story of beauty from ashes, exploring the grit and glory of a lost child returning home to the Father.

Let’s tell the world that stories of redemption and grace are still the ones we crave.

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned;
Nor shall the flames scorch you."
—Isaiah 43:2

What do you enjoy? I find I am encountering delig What do you enjoy?

I find I am encountering delight in all the wonderful enjoys and even maybe not so enjoys in life.

Because I am finding a beautiful blessing tucked in by One who loves me so. Thank you Jesus.

Brush through the slides for "I Enjoy: A Litany of Gratitude" or read here:

I enjoy lipstick the color of berries,
a shimmer of eyeshadow
and a good brow brush.

I enjoy bold coffee,
sitting with God and listening.

I enjoy early, slow mornings,
lazy afternoons,
and loungy evenings
peppered with good old-fashioned work
like vacuuming a big house,
folding tea towels,
and penning a poem or two.

I enjoy the epiphanies that come
after days of wrestling
with concern, conflict, and desire
as God invites me into His Word,
and right there is just what I am meant to know.

I enjoy walking in the heat
that feels like swimming in the air to me.
The sun in my eyes and on my body too.
Or when the rain pelts,
and I dash in and watch
the sky crackle,
snuggling close to my husband,
and I think about how we sometimes
have a rare snowfall,
and I am five again,
traipsing in those snow boots
just for the rare snow.

And when I forget to enjoy,
as sometimes we do,
especially with things like sadness,
loneliness, and when the world is hurting
along with your heart,
and a friend’s old letter reminds you
of days gone by,
I find that even in these times
there are unexpected blessings
as we find shelter in God’s comfort
and there find His treasures of hope,
kindling our hearts
and filling our cups with a joy
that comes not from what we do,
but just because
we are loved.

...

Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
Andrivers in the desert.
—Isaiah 43:19 NKJV
...

Enjoy ❤️

I’ve been thinking about what I am grateful for, l I’ve been thinking about what I am grateful for, like bold coffee, sitting with God, and listening. And all of this thinking has been pouring into a poem called I Enjoy: A Litany of Gratitude that I can’t wait to share with you.

I would love to hear what you are enjoying and what you are grateful for.

“I’ve Been Away” is a new poem I am writing to rem “I’ve Been Away” is a new poem I am writing to remind me of how blessed I am by family and friends. May we never forget the people God places in our lives.

To me, though, it is about so much more than traveling. It is about pilgrimage, our relationships with each other, sharing grief and joy, and the loveliness of returning home with grateful hearts.

I'VE BEEN AWAY

I’ve been away,
up winding roads,
from freeways to lake shores,
from one state to another.

A summer full of aways
of retreats, funerals,
a lakeside reunion,
and stayovers with close friends,
and furry pals.

I’ve been away,
from my home near the woods
to days buzzing with coffee,
conversation, and shared prayers,
and evenings full of pasta, wine, and old movies.

I’ve been away with
family and friends, new and old,
where tears and laughter mingled
to leave holy offerings of love.

I’ve returned from
the wilderness, the city,
and the out-of-town adventures—
each a safe refuge traveled through.

Roadsides
promising the best peach ice cream,
from praises to “Come to the Table,”
to somber descants of “It Is Well,”
to the B-52s.

A world where
holy and hard,
hymn and pop,
believer and non,
living and gone,
are woven into a vibrant tapestry.

Where God invites us
into His love,
to love each other,
and to hold one another as He holds us.

I’ve been away
to retreats, to funerals, to lakeside reunions,
to stayovers with close friends and puppy pals.

Now at home, dear Lord,
please help me not to forget how blessed I am
by the precious people You have placed in my life.

And you, dear friend, where have you been? I’d love to know. Please share in the comments, because you are my family and friends too.

🤍

As I wrestled with that question these words spilled onto the page. I hope this poem reminds you that even in the shadows, there is still His light. Even in the waiting, there is hope. Even here, our Shepherd is near.
