How might we dream during the final bow of Summer when we sense God whispering, “Dream today, my Child.”
Hi, I'm Deborah, a Christian wife poet writer. My passion is writing about the profound ways God is at work in my life, from His lessons to the faith He builds in me. I find His handprints everywhere, giving me glimpses of Heaven to make my day a little easier, kinder, and gentler. I suffered for many years under the burden of sin, shame, regret, and loss, and was freed when I gave my heart to Jesus.
But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.
–John 4:14 NKJV

I sensed God telling me, “Dream today.” So I wrote it down on a Post-it and pinned it to my wall calendar. I am the one who often fills in my schedule, every moment. I want to say yes to everything. (Am I afraid I’ll miss out?)
I sense, though, God’s gentle voice whispering, “Instead, dream, my child.” It was an invitation, not just to dream, but to embark on a journey of self-discovery and inspiration with my Creator. One that I accepted with a hopeful heart.
So with a conscious effort, I decided not to overwhelm this August. Yes, I have goals in writing, health, and family, but I’m holding them with open hands. I’m choosing to lean into the lessons the Lord is teaching me in this season of dreaming, rather than filling every moment with tasks.
Will I be bored? I gasp thinking, “Is there nothing worse than being bored in Summertime?”
Could it be that boredom is not a curse, but a catalyst for dreams? Perhaps it’s the gateway to our imagination and creativity, waiting to be unlocked.
This posture of dreaming is a restful one, a gentle reminder that it’s okay to pause and to find peace in the process of dreaming.
To bask in the beauty of August, a time of rest and dreaming, before Autumn unveils its aromatic beauty with scents, striking colors, and spice. All in preparation for the coming holidays, gathering closer with those we love and celebrating the birth of Jesus.
“Dream today, my child,” I hear echoing.
What do we do when the possibilities seem endless, the to-do list is calling, but God says, “Dream today, my child.”
Well, we dream.
As we enter August and Summer takes its bow, let’s also take a moment to schedule some dream time.
The Lord restores our souls as we lie down in His green pastures before still waters. He is our Shepherd, and it is there that we discover that we have everything that we need.
The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.Psalm 23:1-2
How might we dream during the final bow of Summer?
Here are a few questions to ask, so grab your pen and journal. First, begin with a prayer, and then delve into these questions, allowing them to guide your introspection.
Dear Father, thank you for the gift of dreaming. May I slow down in this August season and allow myself to dream? You plant the desires of my heart into me, and these are the long-lasting dreams. Help me take time to explore them and enjoy them. Grant me a time of repose before the beauty of the Autumn comes rolling in. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.Psalm 37:3-4 NKJV
JOURNAL YOUR DREAMTIME: Embrace this time as a moment of dreaming with God. Ask Him what dreams He has for you. Write down whatever impressions come into your mind. This is free-form dreaming time. No one needs to see your private journal. This is where you can dream. Even if you think it’s ridiculous. That it’s too late. What I have found is that God loves to bless us with the things that we love when the timing is just right. When we are ready for them. When they align with His will.
Think back, when you were a child, what did you love to do? I loved to play, write, and do music. God brought that back to me in the second half of my life. Whenever my 20-something-year-old self thought I was behind, my mother would remind me of Grandma Moses. Grandma Moses painted as a child and then gave it up for motherhood. After her children were grown and her husband passed, she began painting again in her 80s. She invented and became famous for folk art painting.
I hope my essay sparks the possibility of approaching Summer’s bow with intention, one that inspires dreams.
May the Lord bless you and keep you,
Deborah
