Book Review – Journey with Sarah Geringer as she discovers God’s hidden manna on a country road in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.
Follow along with Sarah and her faithful companion, golden lab Memphis, as they walk the country road to the bridge and back through winter, spring, summer, and autumn discovering how God gives prayer prompts in nature to engage in worship with Him.
These beautiful prayer walks give us hope wherever our roads may be.

Sarah writes in Chapter Twenty: Totality, ” Then, as the shadows aligned, I looked southward to see the sun obscured by the moon. I was speechless, although I heard “You Are the Sun” by Sara Groves on repeat in the background. Crickets and cicadas started singing. Cows mooed as they walked back to the barn. A bat flew past my head, thinking dusk had already arrived! The sun’s blaze of light swirled around a pitch-black circle, and I stood marveling at God’s undeniable glory displayed in a breathtaking two-minute, twenty-four-second span.”
Sarah then shared, “If God can align the sun, moon, and earth in a glorious display of his power, WHY am I still living in fear?”

Ah, that is a question for all of us.
This beautiful devotion ends the Spring part of the book. Sarah’s account of the solar eclipse of 2017 and what the future of 2024 might mean for her held my heart as I pondered what my 2024 might be.
There is so much goodness in Sarah Geringer’s new book. Also, you will find a lot of suspense and the mystery of God’s blessings written on the pages of this 40-day devotional.
Through Sarah’s eyes, we see how God presented her with His hidden manna on a country road in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, during the lockdown of 2020. We feel God’s presence in the howl of the wind, an eclipse, old church buildings, ancient oaks, buried treasures, daffodils, and a special crane bird friend.
Sarah is a master storyteller who draws us in with her raw and honest words. Poetry within these hard lines of life and the beauty of God’s provision.
“Season after season, God has been faithful to me on my prayer walks. He has hidden manna each morning, waiting for me to discover it. Whether the manna is in the sky, water, trees, flowers, animals, grasses, or even detritus strewn by people, I can find it when I seek for it with Spirit-led eyes. It feeds my soul, empowering me to grow a little more like Jesus every day.
Sunset by Sarah Geringer, Chapter 40

I asked Sarah the questions below so that we as readers could have an inside look at “Hidden Manna on a Country Road”:
- What is this hidden manna you speak of? Sarah explains, “Hidden manna is scattered all around us. It is a metaphor of God’s provision and presence in nature and even man-made things. When you look at a flower, leaf, rock, or a man-made thing like a bridge, you can ponder what it speaks to you about God’s character, his plans for you, or how he wants you to pray for others.”
- Why did you write this book? Sarah tells, “I wrote this book because I went on prayer walks in nature while walking my dog. Through those walks in nature, I discovered many treasures I had never noticed before. These signs of God’s presence and provision were too good not to share, so I turned them into 40 short chapters in a devotional book for others to enjoy as well.”
- What is your hope for this book? Sarah discloses, “My hope is that no matter where readers live, whether city or country, on the coast or landlocked, they will discover new signs of God’s presence all around them, and connect more deeply with him through freshly inspired prayers.”
This book is perfect for those who love nature, canine pals, travel destinations, Missourians, Midwesterners, whether in the city or country, on the coast or landlocked, and those looking for fresh inspiration for their prayer life. Along with Sarah’s personal stories are her photos of the grandeur of her country road in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. Each devotion has a prayer and reflection questions.
