When any opportunity for negative or comparison thoughts comes up, we can replace them with God’s beautiful promises. This is the joy of reflecting Jesus.

As a makeup artist for film and television, I spend more time in front of the mirror than usual. I know the value of protecting my thoughts by focusing on Jesus to reflect His image, defending myself from self-doubt and self-criticism.

We can keep our minds free of comparison and negative self-talk by keeping our minds in Scripture.

Do we need protection in front of the mirror? The Bible instructs us to put on the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-18. As Christians, we are constantly in a spiritual battle. The wonderful thing is God gives us a way to protect ourselves. Let no scheme of Satan thwart or sabotage you, no clink in your armor, and stay steadfast and strong at all times. Our protective faith shield protects us when we carry God’s words, promises, and truth in our hearts.

Our reflection ought to reflect Christ. Self-care is self-love that prepares us to love each other and be Christ-like, “To love others as ourselves.” (Matthew 22:39). We certainly can’t love ourselves if we are not kind, gentle, and loving with ourselves. Grooming, makeup, hair, and skincare are part of this love. Self-care builds our confidence as we prepare to put our best step forward, being God’s best out in the world.

I put together 9 Scripture verses to mediate on implanting them in our hearts. So, when any opportunity for negative or comparison thoughts come up, we can replace them with beautiful God promises.

  1. Rejoicing with you, Deborah, that God has brought you freedom and a testimony of victory. May many others be set free through your testimony of His faithfulness.

  2. Thank you so much for reminding us that God is faithful all the time! This one blessed me deeply today, friend!

  3. Beautiful thoughts, Debbie! It can be so easy to think of ourselves in terms of the way others see us instead of how Christ sees us. Wonderful encouragement for today!

  4. Oh the beauty of reflecting Jesus, my Friend. Your words are like a balm to my wounded soul. For so many years I tried reflecting other things, people, and what was expected of me; always trying to hide the glaring flaws I focused on.
But I finally realized my head was full of lies and negative words spoken over me by others and even myself!
God never speaks condemnation over His beloved, such comfort found there!

    1. Donna, I a happy that this resonates with you my dear friend. Yes that is what is so wonderful – when we see how God loves us and speaks over us – we see only kind and loving words and thoughts.
