God Only Creates Beauty-
Teens scattered throughout the room playing board games and spike ball, while I peered up, visiting with a junior high girl and her friend. I had been one of her camp counselors the previous summer and we had just finished catching up.
“You’re so pretty,” her friend chimed in. “You’re just so naturally pretty.”
I smiled. “Aw, thank you so much. So are you!”
I felt flattered and was happy to return the compliment. Unfortunately, she did not receive it in the same way.
“No, I’m not.”
At this my heart sank.
“Well,” she continued, “I am right now, but that is only because I’m wearing makeup.”
I noticed her winged, black eyeliner and caked-on foundation. My heart sank even deeper into my chest, knowing that this precious girl was not comfortable in her own skin.
I remember a time when I felt similarly, like I needed makeup to be beautiful. Getting ready for soccer practice one afternoon, I layered on concealer to hide my blemishes and mascara to accentuate my eyes. My mom walked by and commented, “It’s not a fashion show.”
“I know.” But in my heart, it was. I desperately wanted my teammate’s approval.
My response to this girl was simple. I told her makeup only enhances her natural features and the fact that God created her is what makes her beautiful.
I think back to that moment often and find myself wishing I would have said so much more. If I had more time or opportunity, I would like to think this is what I would have said:
Our God is intentional. Psalm 139:13 says that God knit you together in your mother’s womb. He intentionally gave you every strand of hair on your head. He intentionally formed the structure of your face just the way it is. I know you have probably heard that a million times, yet you still look in the mirror and don’t find yourself beautiful, so hear me out. It’s all perspective.
Society’s idea of beauty is standardized, distorted, and impossible. In society’s eyes, beauty is measured by face structure, hair, eyes, skin, etc. But I promise you, that girl you’ve seen on social media or walking down the halls who seems so perfect has at some point looked in the mirror and wished she was more beautiful.
Our God is perfect. Everything that comes from Him reflects His perfect design. He is incapable of ugliness. Anyone created by our perfect God is, by definition, beautiful because He is incapable of anything otherwise. In other words, God does not create ugly. Although we see God’s beauty being distorted by sin in our world today, you are Christ’s masterpiece! (Ephesians 2:10)
In the book Live on Purpose, Sadie Robertson says, “He (God) created you to reveal a new image of beauty and another side of himself to the world.” I could not have said it any better. No one is beautiful like you are, and He reveals to the world a new perspective of beauty through you. And that goes for each individual person.
When it comes to worldly standards, I am far from beautiful, but when it comes to God’s standards, I am nothing but! Galatians 1:10 (NIV) states, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Dear friend, you must decide who your audience is and who you desire to please. If it is social media, your peers, or any human being around you, you will more than likely be left feeling less than, lonely, and even worthless. I know that’s where it left me. If you choose to pursue God, however, choose to confidently believe every truthful word He speaks about you; He promises in His Word that your joy will be complete (John 15:10–11).
You are not beautiful because you have perfect hair, skin, or teeth. You are beautiful because the Creator of the universe loved you so much that He created you in His image to showcase to the world another facet of beauty.
So the next time you look into the mirror, l encourage you to rid yourself of comparison and just gaze into God’s masterpiece. Pray for eyes to see the beauty within you and a heart to believe it. Because, just like that junior high girl, you were created with intention. You were created with precision. You were created perfectly beautiful by a perfectly beautiful God.
