In the past, I chased after beauty. For many years I reached for what I thought beauty was. But no matter how hard I tried I ended up with the opposite of beauty. An eating disorder in my younger years, insecurity, anxiety, and depression. But thankfully God showed me a better way.

What if we were to change from seeing our beauty, our appearance, as only something on the outside to growing an inner spiritual beauty? Asking important questions like, “How are we shining our light into the world?”
Because isn’t that what is important?
There is nothing wrong with having nice hair, pretty makeup, and cute clothes, but if we start on the inside, we will develop a pure and gentle beauty pointing to God.
The True Beauty of a Godly Woman

“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 NKJV
As Christians, our beauty is an inner Spiritual beauty first. Inward adornment rather than outward adornment.
Peter wasn’t against women adorning themselves and neither is God. God wants us to look our best as His representatives. What Peter is saying here is that rather than focusing on outward adornment, focus on inward adornment – our inner spiritual beauty.
Our inner spiritual beauty is a beauty of a humble spirit, a Proverbs 31 woman with her beauty from the inside out. We then become a reflection of Christ.
Let our beauty be the hidden person of the heart. Because our beauty is not attained by doing our hair, makeup, or putting on the latest fashion, but true beauty is something we are.
True beauty is an incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. The beauty of the flesh, and of the world, is fleeting but incorruptible beauty is eternal because it comes from God. No aging, life season, or complications can take away incorruptible beauty.
Although our culture does not promote a gentle and quiet spirit for women, God treasures these character traits.
As we care for our appearance, it is vital to ask if we are caring for what is on the inside. Because when we grow inner spiritual beauty the light of Jesus shines through us pointing to Jesus.

Practical application:
By cultivating a gentle and quiet spirit, we adorn ourselves with the character of Jesus, reflecting Him.
We do this by being humble and submitting ourselves in obedience to God for everything in our lives allowing Christ to be glorified in us.
Pray for opportunities to shine your light. It can be the light of love, gentleness, serving, forgiving, and charity.

Today I am praying for opportunities to shine the light of kindness and most important resting from my opinions. Opinions that often lead me astray rather than loving and giving grace as God gives to me.
And you? How are you shining your light?

Deborah, this is just lovely. As I am growing older and at times see the changes which age is bringing, it has made me realize how important it is to cultivate my inner being. “Although our culture does not promote a gentle and quiet spirit for women, God treasures these character traits.” I want to grow those character traits God treasures. Beautiful reminder today!
Joanne, thank you. Growing older does provide us with a different perspective. I am meeting a lot of women who are looking for lasting beauty and surely God is our eternal beauty. I too want to grow a gentle and quiet spirit, an inner spiritual beauty, and with the help of God, we can.
Love this! It is encouraging because, as a quiet spirit, I generally get criticized by people. It’s comforting to know that God appreciates it, even when others don’t. ??
Megan, your gift of a quiet spirit will be what God uses as your strength to help us women who need to cultivate these godly traits. Thank you for reading.
This is so beautiful! I love how you said let our beauty be the hidden person of the heart. Even our beauty is meant for an audience of One … and He can then shine through us to others. Love this post my friend, sharing this morning … ???
Donna, thank you. I read that what a writer writes is only finished when a reader reads it. You complete my thoughts here with your beautiful insights and words. I love that even our beauty is meant for God. He has created us so beautifully.
Such eternal truths, Deborah, that bring freedom to our spirits and our minds. May the Lord help us cultivate a gentle and quiet spirit and an incorruptible beauty that does not fade away.
Lisa, yes we are blessed for God’s eternal truths that help us navigate this world and always point us to His eternal Kingdom.
