There is hush for the soul in the New Year as we trade our noise for His melody of grace. To begin, you can download the free HUSH Scripture & Reflection cards.
Though the New Year often feels like a race to “jump in” or “push ahead,” I feel a different invitation this year.
TweetThen He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. – 1 Kings 19:11–12 NKJV
Though the New Year often feels like a race to “jump in” or “push ahead,” I feel a different invitation this year. It is a gentle call to attune to God—to shift from striving to surrender, from noise to obedience. Like the prophet Elijah, I am learning to listen to His “still small voice.” God rarely shouts; He waits for the hush of our hearts to invite us into His sanctuary.
I have leaned into this throughout the Christmas season in lingering mornings of prayer, long walks, and the pages of a good book. I have been losing myself in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings—a pacing often described as a “lazy river float.” It is a cadence that mirrors the serene, epic journey of my soul this season. Within these quiet rhythms, I hear God’s counsel in sweet whispers and Spirit-filled epiphanies.
However, even in this peace, anxiety can spill over. While making tea recently, my mind raced and my heart felt shaken. I had taken my eyes off Jesus. But as I refocused, I remembered that an unstill mind is simply a noisy one. God is sovereign, and He is kind enough to provide new mercies every morning to soothe a restless heart.
While reading The Return of the King, I saw that Samwise Gamgee had a similar moment of refocusing: “The thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”
A big thing I have learned this past year is to trust God and His plan for my life. This helps me see my struggles not as roadblocks but as sacred invitations to draw closer to Him—windows to ask for help, to confess, and to see His handiwork: refining, shaping, and transforming me.
Every heartbeat and breath belongs to God. His divine love is the fabric of life, and we are all part of His glorious design. The beautiful truth is that our lives are never a mess to God. He is the order in our disorder—the grace found within our chaos.
I have found solace in David’s Psalm 62 :
- Wait in Silence: “Truly my soul waits in silence for God alone.” (v. 1) — This is where we turn off the clamor to hear His soft voice.
- Seek His Security: “He alone is my rock and my salvation.” (v. 6) — Our security is God alone, and only this truly quiets our hearts.
- Pour It Out: “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him.” (v. 8) — Clearing out the “noise” makes room for His voice.
There is relief for our crushing toil. Throughout the day—in peaceful meals, unexpected stumbles, and pockets of praise—we can thank the Father. We feel His embrace as He leads, showing us when to repent and when to be renewed. We praise Him as our Comforter and Deliverer. Nothing is ordinary, because every encounter with God is extraordinary.
As we step into 2026, let’s keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and spread the glorious news: the Prince of Peace has come, and He is the destination our souls have been racing toward. While the world encourages a “sprint,” Psalm 62:5 reminds us, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him.” This is where we turn over our burdens and let them rest on our Rock. Let’s slow down to His rhythm; there, we might just hear His lovely melody.
Prayer
Jesus, Prince of Peace, calm our hearts and still our noise so that we can hear You. May we rest in the melody of Your grace as we step into the New Year, secure in Your promises. Amen.
