From Flaws to Features: How come we often dislike parts of us that makes us us? For me growing up it was my curly hair a one crooked tooth.
What if we stop viewing ourselves as flawed and instead recognize that the feature we once thought wasn’t pretty enough is our most lovely one? #Christianbeauty #beauty #Godgivenbeauty

A Journey of Self Love
Growing up, I hated my curly brown hair and my one crooked tooth. This was in the 1970s, and straight hair was in. So, I straightened mine. My mom would tell me that when I grew up, I would love my curly hair.
In the 1980s, big hair was in, and I went natural. Some of my friends even thought I had gotten a perm.
Now I love my curly hair. I can wear it in so many different ways, and my husband loves it too. My celebrity dentist told me to keep my crooked tooth because it is what makes me unique.
These are my unique features, purposely made and given to me by God.
I had thought they were flaws because of what society, the magazines, and celebrities were telling me.
Had I been listening to God, I would have seen that He uniquely made me this way.
What if we stop viewing ourselves as flawed and instead recognize that the feature we once thought wasn’t pretty enough is our most lovely one?
What if we embraced our God-given uniqueness?
Granted, this is hard some days, and it’s not just age. I have always felt that somehow my body and beauty were less desirable than those of others. It has been a battle to switch my worldview to God’s view. But so rewarding and a relief to do it.
Now, when I am frustrated with the scale, a wrinkle, a day when my hair seems wild, or a frumpy photo, I can surrender it to God. In doing so, I acknowledge that I have these feelings and need His help to transform my doubts, fears, and comparison thinking into His truth of who and what I really am, His daughter.
When the voices of doubt come rolling in, telling us we’re not pretty, our bodies are wrong, not this or not that, and that she’s more, we can counter these voices with God’s truth, that we are beautiful, chosen, cherished, valued, and worthy.
Do you have a unique feature that you have learned to love?
This writing is inspired by my discussion with my friend on how to help our young girls navigate their beauty and comparison. This had me reflecting on my own struggles as a young girl and now, and what God is teaching me.
I took the subtitle from my niece Nikki Dee, “…the little things that we hate are like the best parts of what makes us us.”
Can’t wait to hear how about your unique feature that you learned to love. I think this is such an important conversation and look forward to hearing from.
